Visit Cleveland's historic Jewish cemetery. In April 1840, the Israelitic Society, today known as Congregation Mishkon Or, requested permission from city council to purchase a portion of Erie Street Cemetery, but the request was denied. Three months later, the Society purchased an acre of land at the junction of Willett Street (now Fulton Road) and Monroe Street in Ohio City from Josiah Barber for $100. This land became Cleveland’s first Jewish burial ground. The first burial here was that of Mr. Alexander Kahnweiler, marking the beginning of a lasting Jewish presence in the city.
Located on Fulton just south of Lorain Avenue, the cemetery sits in the heart of the neighborhood where many of Cleveland’s earliest Jewish settlers made their homes. On this tour, you’ll explore Jewish history in Cleveland, learn about traditional burial practices, and discover how this sacred site reflects the importance of community in Jewish heritage.
