Playhouse Square

90-Minute Signature Tour

June + July | Sundays | 10am

Playhouse Square is more than a collection of beautifully restored theaters—it’s a living, evolving district where Cleveland’s history continues to shape everyday experiences. The five historic Playhouse Square theaters first opened in the early 1920s, forming one of the nation’s most vibrant entertainment corridors. After narrowly avoiding the wrecking ball in the 1970s, the district began a remarkable comeback in the 1980s—transforming into what is now the largest performing arts center in the country outside of New York, with 11 performance spaces.

This guided walking tour explores the architectural grandeur and cultural significance of Playhouse Square, highlighting its iconic theaters alongside the surrounding historic buildings that continue to serve the neighborhood today. Along the way, you’ll discover how former office buildings, hotels, and commercial spaces have been thoughtfully adapted into residences, workplaces, restaurants, and gathering spaces—preserving their historic character while supporting a vibrant downtown community.

Characters you may meet along the tour: Alan Freed and Milton Krantz
